The History Of Estee Lauder Makeup

Estee Lauder has been creating beauty products since 1935. Learn about the history of the brand and learn how to find The Cosmetics Company Outlet, and one of the biggest stories in makeup history.

The woman who would become Estee Lauder, was born with the name, Josephine Esther Mentzer. She was a first generation American who grew up with Hungarian-Jewish parents. Her mother had wanted to name her Esty, but somehow Esther is what ended up on the birth certificate. But she was called Esty by her family.

During her childhood years, her father was a tailor who made high end clothing, but he found he could do better by running a hardware store. Esty worked in the store, and gained experience in retail and merchandising.

Also influential on the young Estee, was her Uncle who was a chemist. He taught her about skin care, showing her how to make skin cream and telling her not to use soap on her face.

When Esty was growing up, her mother always carried a parasol and wore gloves to keep the rays of the sun from her skin.

In 1930, Esty married her husband and future business partner, Joseph Lauder.

Estee had stunning skin. A salon owner noticed her beautiful skin and complimented her on it. She showed the salon owner the skin care formulas she was using and the salon started to retail them.

Estee and her husband Joseph, founded Estee Lauder in 1935.

Estee Lauder started the Gift with Purchase makeup idea, giving away bonus sized lipsticks with some of her products.

Estee Lauder currently owns some of the most universally known makeup brands, including, Bobbi Brown, Bumble & Bumble, Clinique, MAC makeup, Origins, Stila (now sold), and many others.
