Making A Name In Horse Photography

A horse can jog in his sleep, but can he pose? Pasadena, California, is the home of the only lady in the world, an equestrian photographer, who can get them to pose, and her portraits are featured in celebrity homes. She has done jobs trackside, Olympic jobs, jobs of British princesses, and she started out with a camera borrowed from Pasadena City College. This graduate of Pasadena High School chose to study photography at PCC, for which she practiced on horses for pragmatic reasons. The Eaton Canyon Riding Stables were just a jump away from where she lived as a kid. She completed her assignments by photographing horses with her borrowed camera. Her first photo sold, and she was on her way to a full-blown career, giving up music, art and journalism.

 

First, she became an assistant under two famous photographers at a horse show in Santa Barbara, after which she traveled the country with them, helping them pose horses in tracks, shows, and state fairs. After her first apprenticeship, she found another mentor pair who led her to shows around California. Nowadays, she works with her Swedish camera with German lens and lets her mother take care of business.

 

She is known for exciting shots, from clearing six-foot hurdles to nosing a win. She can also take great formal shots, with horses down on all fours. Some horses are born to be models. She found horses that immediately perk their ears or raise their heads when they feel a camera being focused on them. Other horses are as unhelpful as can be. Random shots seldom end in good pictures. Mid-air with legs bent at the right angle is the best bet for hunters and jumpers. Tennessee walkers pictured at their best have high action with their front hoofs and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. A stock horse at his best is shot stopping in a slide and a spirited saddle horse is shown off at his best with his legs at their highest point and his head held high. Some of her acclaimed works are of the Peruvian Paso, an endangered South American species that groups are scrambling to have multiplied. She has met many a celebrity horse enthusiast through her work. She has even had the chance to mingle with royalty. She rubbed shoulders with the Queen at the Montreal Olympics after taking photos of Princess Anne. She asked Queen Elizabeth how it felt to watch her daughter take the high jump, and she said it made her quite nervous. She began to photograph fork lifts for a little variation, even though she fills her spare time with swimming, back packing, bicycling, panning for gold and sometimes even horse riding.
